Awakening the Path to Freedom and Enlightenment
Dear friends, I am excited to share that my upcoming book, Awakening the Path to Freedom and Enlightenment, will be released on January 6th, 2026. To celebrate this, we are organizing a global meditation for awakening, with the hope of over a million people joining. Stay tuned for more details on how to participate!
Understanding Awakening in Yogic Traditions
In light of the upcoming release, I would like to offer a glimpse into what awakening entails, particularly from the perspective of yogic traditions. Awakening signifies a profound shift from identifying with the body and mind to abiding as the timeless witness—the Sākṣī—who perceives the body, mind, and the world as transient scenes in a movie.
The Nature of the Witness
According to the Vedānta and the Gītā, the awakened state is characterized by the changeless witness that illuminates our experiences but remains untouched by them. The body continues to function and the mind continues to think, but these activities belong to Prakṛti, or Anātmā. The self, or the witness, is akin to space, which remains unaffected by the storms it contains.
Freedom and Liberation
In the teachings of Yoga Vāsiṣṭha, the concept of enlightenment, or Jīvanmukti, is described as a state where the sage perceives both the ultimate truth and the relative world. The sage remains inwardly free while life unfolds outwardly, recognizing that sensations, experiences, and even personal narratives are ultimately part of consciousness modulation—real in appearance but not in essence.
The Divine Play of Consciousness
Further enriching this understanding, Kashmir Shaivism posits that the unfolding of existence is not a mistake but a divine play, or Līlā. Awareness manifests as the subject, object, and the world, exploring its infinite possibilities. This recognition leads to a deep sense of compassion, as everything that appears is understood as interconnected expressions of the same radiant awareness.
The Experience of Awakening
Awakening involves a stable recognition that the timeless self is the luminous and loving background of all experiences. As we observe the body, mind, and world, they are perceived as passing phenomena without losing touch with the witnessing awareness.
A Guided Meditation
To embody this understanding, let’s engage in a brief meditation:
- Assume a dignified yet relaxed posture.
- Close or soften your eyes and feel the sensations of your body in contact with the chair or cushion.
- Notice all experiences without clinging to them; simply acknowledge, “This is how the show appears right now.”
- Recognize the awareness of sensations, thoughts, and emotions without judgment.
- Visualize your life story as a vast movie, unfolding within the changeless presence of awareness.
- Allow anything that arises—pleasant or painful—to be met with openness and love.
- Silently affirm your identity as the timeless witness of all change.
- As you end the meditation, gently open your eyes and carry this awareness into your daily life.
Conclusion
As you navigate your experiences, remember that everything comes and goes, and you are the space in which they unfold. This loving awareness is your true essence. Embrace it and carry this remembrance with you.
Thank you for joining me on this journey towards awakening.
Namaste.
