From the day we are born until the day we die, the quality of our social bonds dictates much of our quality of life.
The Neural Circuitry of Social Bonds
It should therefore be no surprise that our brain and indeed much of our entire nervous system is wired for social bonds. Today we will discuss the brain and nervous system circuitries that underpin these connections, as well as the neurochemicals and hormones involved, such as oxytocin.
Social Isolation: The Mirror Image
Before diving deeper into social bonding, it’s crucial to address its opposite: social isolation. While many people may enjoy their alone time, social isolation refers to being deprived of preferred social contacts. This condition is stressful and can lead to chronically elevated stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, negatively impacting the immune system and overall health.
Social Homeostasis
Interestingly, there is a biological drive for social interaction, much like hunger. This drive is regulated by a concept known as social homeostasis, which consists of three components: a detector, a control center, and an aector (the behavioral response). The brain structures involved include:
