Some experts recommend melatonin as a first-line agent to treat insomnia in older adults. However, the World Sleep Society disagrees due to its low efficacy. While people may report better sleep subjectively, a meta-analysis shows that melatonin only helps individuals fall asleep about four minutes faster and extend overall sleep duration by roughly thirteen minutes.
For those considering melatonin for sleep, older adults are advised to start with the smallest effective dose, perhaps at 0.3 milligrams, taken an hour before bedtime. It’s important to note that the 12-milligram supplements available on the market can produce levels in the bloodstream that are two hundred times higher than normal nightly levels, raising safety concerns.
