Natural Remedies for Eye Health and More: The Power of Saffron
Have you ever wondered if there are more natural ways to lower your high blood pressure, guard against Alzheimer’s, lose weight, and feel better? Well, it turns out there is! Welcome to the Nutrition Facts Podcast. I’m your host, Dr. Michael Greger.
The Benefits of Blueberries and Saffron for Eye Health
Did you know that eight threads of saffron a day can improve visual acuity in older adults with mild or moderate age-related macular degeneration? In addition to two to three daily servings of green leafy vegetables, berries are considered a healthy choice for the preservation of eye health.
As we age, our critical retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer starts to break down. However, we may be able to decelerate that aging with blueberries. Human RPE cells bathed in blueberry anthocyanins showed fewer free radicals and a lower proportion of aged cells, suggesting that blueberries, along with other red, blue, and purple pigmented fruits and vegetables, may help prevent age-related macular degeneration.
Human Studies on Berries
Only a few human interventional trials on berries for vision have been conducted. One trial using bilberry extract demonstrated significantly less eye strain after iPad use compared to a placebo. Another study showed that three weeks of blueberry juice or freeze-dried blueberry powder significantly improved photostress recovery time, which is the time needed to recuperate visual acuity after bright light exposure by about five seconds.
Saffron: A Potent Spice
Saffron has been extensively studied for its effects on macular degeneration. In a randomized trial, patients with early-stage age-related macular degeneration were given 20 mg of saffron daily (about 8 threads) for three months. The saffron group experienced a significant improvement in retinal flicker sensitivity and visual acuity compared to the placebo group.
Interestingly, a larger dose of 50 mg was tested, but it did not lead to a greater improvement, suggesting that more is not necessarily better with saffron.
Additional Benefits of Saffron
Saffron's benefits extend beyond eye health. It has traditionally been considered an aphrodisiac and has shown promise in treating erectile dysfunction. In a study involving men with erectile dysfunction, those who took 200 mg of saffron daily for ten days showed significant improvements in penile rigidity and tumescence.
Saffron vs. Viagra
A head-to-head study of saffron versus Viagra found that while saffron had fewer side effects, it was not as effective as Viagra in treating erectile dysfunction. However, topical application of saffron gel showed significant improvements in sexual function and satisfaction compared to a placebo gel.
Saffron for PMS Relief
Lastly, saffron appears to improve both the emotional and physical symptoms of PMS. In a study, women experiencing PMS were given saffron capsules, which significantly alleviated symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, cramps, and depression.
Conclusion
Incorporating saffron into your diet may provide numerous health benefits, particularly for eye health, erectile dysfunction, and PMS relief. Natural remedies like saffron offer a promising alternative to traditional medications, with fewer side effects and a holistic approach to wellbeing.
