Resilience in Health: A Journey to Recovery and Athletic Goals
Recently, I found myself in Australia, but unfortunately, I became quite ill—perhaps the sickest I've been in a decade. This experience left me holed up in a hotel room for three to four days, barely eating or sleeping, and ultimately losing about 15 pounds. Thankfully, I’m back on the mend and recently resumed my training. This article reflects on my recent struggles, my recovery, and my ambitious athletic aspirations as I approach my 60th birthday.
Facing Adversity: Illness and Recovery
During my trip, the combination of a long flight, exposure to illness, and drastic time zone changes took a toll on my health. Although I was disappointed that I couldn’t fully participate in the carnival live event I traveled for, I managed to give my lecture and sit on a panel. Now, two weeks later, I’m on the road to recovery, slowly easing back into my workouts.
Setting Athletic Goals for My 60th Year
As I approach my 60th birthday on January 10th, I’ve set some ambitious athletic goals for myself. I aim to:
- Break several rowing world records
- Deadlift 600 lbs
- Run 100 meters in under 13 seconds
- Run 400 meters in under a minute
- Dunk a basketball
While these goals are challenging, I believe they are achievable. My training strategy will evolve as I progress, focusing first on rowing records around my birthday and then transitioning to lighter body weight metrics later in the year.
The Importance of Nutrition and Recovery
Nutrition plays a pivotal role in my training. I will continue following a carnivore diet, which helps with joint health and provides high-quality protein. Adequate fat intake is crucial to fuel my performance. As I age, I want to inspire others to push beyond the typical limitations associated with aging. We often underestimate our resilience and capacity for growth.
Dealing with Injuries and Training Smart
As I pursue these goals, I am also managing a quadriceps tendon strain that I sustained while squatting. Injuries are a part of pushing physical limits, but they should not deter us from our goals. Instead, they require us to adapt and focus on progressive loading to heal properly. Currently, I’m engaging in low-level plyometrics and strength training to rebuild my capacity.
Training Like an Athlete: A Philosophy for All Ages
I believe that older adults should train similarly to younger athletes. While there are some necessary adjustments, training at high intensity and near one’s capacity is important for everyone. The volume of training can be modified, but the focus should remain on pushing one’s limits intelligently.
Take Control of Your Health
It’s crucial to navigate health challenges with a resilient mindset. I've witnessed how misinformation in the healthcare system can lead to ineffective treatments. This drives me to promote evidence-based practices that truly help people improve their health.
